Plans revealed for major windfarm and renewable energy development in Waterford

The development is planned for townlands between Dungarvan and Youghal in West Waterford
Plans have been revealed for a major windfarm and renewable energy development in County Waterford.
A planning application has been submitted in relation to the development which is planned for townlands between Dungarvan and Youghal.
Planning permission is being sought for the construction of 23 wind turbines in the area, each with blade tip heights of 170-185 metres.
There are also plans for a 110kV substation, a 220kV loop-in substation and a 220kV underground connection to the existing Knockraha–Cullenagh 220kV overhead line.
As well as that, a number of associated site works would be carried out.
The proposed development, known as the Slievegrine Renewable Energy Development, would cover a wide range of townlands in the area.
These include Ballycullane, Ballyguiry, Carronadavderg, Carronahyla, Carronbeg, Clashbrack, Cloghraun, Drumslig, Garrynagree, Glen Beg, Glen More, Graigue, Knockatoor, Knocknahoola, Lackamore, Lackensillagh, Lisgriffin, Lyre, Monacullee, Monageela, Mountstuart and Moyng.
The developers, Slievegrine Ltd, said: “The proposed development is being brought forward in response to local, national, regional and European policy regarding Ireland’s transition to a low carbon economy, associated climate change policy objectives and to reduce Ireland’s dependence on imported fossil fuels for the production of electricity.”
The planning application has been submitted directly to An Coimisiún Pleanála due to its status as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID).
This means that Waterford City and County Council has no power to grant or refuse permission for the development.
However, it will be invited to make a submission to the commission outlining its position.
A decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála is expected by October 2027.
