Gardaí caught a driver doing a speed of 142km/h on a road near the Waterford-Kilkenny border over the weekend.

The driver was observed at the speed on the N24 at Belline and Rogerstown, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny. The road is a 100km/h zone.

The driver was one of thousands of drivers detected for speeding over the course of the August bank holiday weekend.

In another incident close to the Waterford border, a driver was observed doing a speed of 126km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Waterford Road, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

Nearly 3400 drivers have been detected for speeding offences during the first four days of the gardaí’s bank holiday operation, which is continuing today.

Meanwhile, a total of 121 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Furthermore, just under 310 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone. Slow down and stick to the speed limit.

“Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving.

“You can help get another person home safe this weekend.”
