Aerial footage from a passing plane has revealed the extent of the progress being made on the runway extension at Waterford Airport.

The video, posted to YouTube by the channel ‘Shaking’, provides an overhead view of the runway in its current state.

The description of the video reads: “I took a spin down to Waterford to have a look at the new runway. The first pass is from north to south, the second is in the opposite direction.”

The video shows the plane crossing the River Suir near Waterford Castle before heading in the direction of the airport.

On the approach to the airport, the full length of the runway can be clearly seen, with it extending nearly as far north as the Airport Road.

To the south, the runway is nearly extended as far as the R685 road between Dunmore East and Tramore.

The video reveals that a new surface, most likely tarmacadam, has been laid on a portion of the south side of the runway.

The rest of the runway’s surface remains incomplete.

However, a large amount of ground excavation work has been carried out on the site of the runway and its surroundings.

As part of the project, the airport’s runway is being lengthened to 2,287 metres and widened to 45 metres to accommodate larger commercial jet aircraft.
