Council ‘at mercy’ of ESB over ‘completely dark’ street in Waterford city

Cllr Joe Kelly raised the issue at the July meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District
Waterford City and County Council is “at the mercy” of the ESB when it comes to a “completely dark” street in the city, a council meeting has heard.
Independent councillor Joe Kelly raised the issue at the July meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.
Cllr Kelly said: “The public lighting at the far end of Hawthorn Drive and Hillview has been out for about five months.
“There’s not a shovel that’s been put in the ground. I’m looking for an update as to when that work will start to repair those four or five lights that make that entire end of the street completely dark.
“At this rate, I fear we’ll be heading into the winter with dark nights and nothing will be fixed, so I am looking for an update on that.”
In response, Paul Johnston, Senior Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that the timing is up to the ESB.
Mr Johnston said: “The issue of public lighting in Hawthorn Drive - again, we’re somewhat at the mercy of the ESB.
“We have given the go-ahead to repair that and I’ll come back to you separately and we’ll talk about the timing as to the repairs.”
Cllr Kelly has been raising the issue of public lighting in the estate for several months.
