The Tramore man appeared before Waterford District Court this morning

A local man has appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged stabbing in a church in County Waterford yesterday.

The incident occurred at Holy Cross Church in Tramore at around 9:45am on Tuesday morning.

A woman in her 50s remains at University Hospital Waterford with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Niall Cummins (36), with an address at The Willows, Clarinwood, appeared before Waterford District Court this morning.

He was charged with assault causing harm contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Sergeant Robert Flynn of Tramore Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

Sergeant Flynn told the court that at 10am on Tuesday morning, he arrested the accused at his residence in The Willows.

Cummins made no reply to the charge put to him.

Sergeant Flynn said that the State would object to any bail application. However, the accused chose not to do so.

He was not represented in court by a solicitor, amid the ongoing dispute over legal aid payments.

Sergeant Flynn requested that a psychiatric evaluation be carried out on the accused.

Judge John Cheatle remanded Cummins in custody, to appear again before Waterford District Court via video link on Tuesday, July 28.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who was in the Summerhill area between 9.15am and 10.15am and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to contact Tramore Garda Station on 051 391620, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Investigations are ongoing.
