A local resident of Cappoquin brought forward their concerns in a question submitted to the Waterford Local Community Safety Partnership

Concerns have been raised over the presence of masked individuals and cars “doing donuts” in a County Waterford village.

A local resident of Cappoquin brought forward their concerns in a question submitted to the Waterford Local Community Safety Partnership (WLCSP).

The question was subsequently addressed at a public meeting of the WLCSP, which was held in City Hall on Monday last.

The resident raised concerns over the lack of garda presence in the village and said they had only seen a garda in the area on one occasion in recent times.

They said that an increased garda presence is needed in the area due to the amount of anti-social behaviour taking place.

The resident also said that there were cars “doing donuts” and driving at “dangerous speeds” along the road through the village.

Furthermore, they raised concerns over the presence of “masked and hooded people” on the streets, which they said was “uncomfortable”.

The resident concluded their submission by asking the gardaí how these concerns would be addressed.

In response, Garda Superintendent Laurence Sheehan said that Cappoquin is a small community with a rural roadway.

He said that speed checks were being carried out in the area on an “almost daily basis”.

Superintendent Sheehan added that the level of garda activity in the village has increased year on year.

He also said that there have been no serious accidents on the road in question so far this year.

However, he did raise more general concerns over the number of arrests being made for intoxicated driving across the county.
