Waterford City and County Council has issued an update on the development

The construction of the new train station in Waterford city has progressed to the “final fit-out stage”, the local authority has confirmed.

Waterford City and County Council issued an update on the development in its Monthly Management Report.

Work is continuing on mechanical and electrical installations, public facilities, information systems and wayfinding signage.

As well as that, there is work outstanding on the northern public plaza, which will serve cars, buses, taxis and cyclists.

A council spokesperson said: “Construction of the new Transport Hub and railway station building has progressed to the final fit-out stage.

“Testing and commissioning of the station’s operational systems will continue over the coming months, along with the construction of the southern entrance to the Transport Hub.

“Iarnród Éireann will continue the installation of trackside signalling, electrical and telecommunications infrastructure throughout 2026 and 2027.”

They continued by saying that regulatory approvals required for the operation of the new station will also be completed during this period.

Subject to the completion of these works and approvals, the new station is expected to open towards the end of 2027.

Completion of the railway flood defence scheme is also required prior to the station opening.
