Waterford City and County Council issued the warning in a post on social media

Residents of County Waterford have been issued a warning over a common practice that could result in a €250 fine.

Waterford City and County Council addressed the issue of bags being left beside recycling banks locally in a post on social media.

A council spokesperson said: “We all have good intentions. You bag up the old clothes, box up the bottles and bring them to your nearest recycling bank.

“But what happens when it’s full? Leaving it beside a full recycling bank is dumping, and you could face a €250 fine.

“So, if it’s full, take it home or find another recycling point.”

The warning comes after on-the-spot litter and anti-pollution fines were increased nationally from €150 to €250.

The increase applies to generalised littering and illegal dumping offences managed by local authorities.
