25 new gardaí have been welcomed to Waterford city ahead of a high-visibility plan being rolled out.

A total of 28 probationer gardaí have been deployed to the Waterford-Kilkenny Garda Division.

Of these, 25 have been deployed to Waterford city whilst two will be based in Dungarvan.

It is their first deployment following their graduation from Garda College in Templemore.

The new gardaí were welcomed to the division by Chief Superintendent Anthony Pettit.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Today at Waterford Garda Station, Chief Superintendent Pettit and Superintendent Hegarty - along with Gardaí Kehoe and O'Brien of the CPD Unit - welcomed 28 new probationer gardaí to the division.

“This is the largest contingent of gardai in this stage of their training to ever be sent to this division from the Garda College following their attestation.

“25 of these new members will be instrumental in the roll out of the high-visibility beats initiative in Waterford city centre.

“They will be around every corner - well almost!”

High-visibility beats are set to get underway in the city as part of An Garda Síochána’s High Visibility Policing Plan.

This plan has been rolled out in other cities such as Dublin, Cork and Galway and is now being extended to Waterford.

It is a uniformed foot-patrol initiative designed to combat street crime, anti-social behaviour, and public order issues.
