An overnight wind shift has led to a strong smell of smoke in Waterford city

A change in wind direction has resulted in smoke from the Slievenamon fire reaching Waterford city.

The Tipperary Fire Service has said that an overnight wind shift has meant that the fire has spread to the eastern side of the mountain.

It pointed out that smoke may be more noticeable on the eastern side of Slievenamon during the day.

This is the side of the mountain which is closest to Waterford city and with a south easterly breeze blowing, the smoke has seemingly reached the city.

A number of residents in urban areas, including in Ferrybank, Ballybeg and Ballygunner, have reported a distinct smell of smoke this morning.

Elsewhere in the county, particularly in the west, residents have reported a “strong smell of smoke” for several days now.

Tipperary Fire Service has reported that fire activity on the mountain’s south face has reduced substantially.

In an update report issued at 10am, the fire service said that good progress in tackling the fire has been achieved through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies.

Residents in the wider area, particularly those located downwind of the fire, are advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area.

Vulnerable groups, including children, older people, pregnant women, and those with respiratory or heart conditions, are advised to take additional precautions and avoid exposure to smoke where possible.
