Waterford City and County Council has welcomed yesterday’s funding announcement

Work on the refurbishment of the Millennium Plaza in Waterford city is set to begin later this year, the local authority has said.

Funding of €465,000 has been announced for the refurbishment of the plaza on the Quay.

The proposed upgrade works will include the installation of new greenery, decking, seating and a water feature.

The announcement made by Minister of State John Cummins yesterday has since been welcomed by Waterford City and County Council.

The Deputy Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Jim Darcy, said: “William Vincent Wallace Plaza occupies a prominent position at the heart of Waterford city and provides an important connection with the River Suir.

“This funding will give the plaza a new lease of life, creating a more welcoming and accessible space where people can meet, relax and enjoy events along the waterfront.

“The refurbishment will also complement the wider regeneration of the city centre, including the redevelopment of the North Quays and Parade Quay.”

He concluded by thanking Minister Cummins for supporting the project.

Meanwhile, a council spokesperson outlined the local authority’s vision for the plaza.

A statement read: “The vision for William Vincent Wallace Plaza is to create a distinctive, landscape-led public space that places people and nature at its centre.

“The renewed plaza will provide a flexible, year-round environment supporting social interaction, community activity, rest and informal recreation, events and performances.

“A strong emphasis will be placed on planting and the landscape character of the plaza.”

It went on to highlight the different features that are proposed for the refurbished plaza.

“The proposed planting strategy will consider plant form, seasonal interest, colour, biodiversity value and long-term sustainability.

“The introduction of trees, planting and enhanced green infrastructure will improve environmental quality, provide greater comfort for users and create a more vibrant and attractive waterfront setting.

“Climate-resilient features will also be incorporated into the design, supporting biodiversity and improving the ecological value of the public realm within the urban core.”

The council spokesperson concluded by saying that AIT Urbanism Landscape Architects have been appointed as the design consultants for the project.

They added that construction is scheduled to commence later this year, with completion anticipated early next year.

The plaza, officially named the William Vincent Wallace Plaza, has been a prominent feature of the Quay for the past 25 years.

However, public representatives have raised concerns over its condition in recent years.
