Waterford TD John Cummins has announced funding for the upgrade works

Plans have been revealed for a major refurbishment of the Millennium Plaza in Waterford city.

Waterford Fine Gael TD and Minister of State John Cummins has announced funding of €465,000 for the refurbishment of the plaza on the Quay.

The proposed upgrade works will include the installation of new greenery, decking, seating and a water feature.

These changes aim to ensure the plaza acts as a “people-centred space that prioritises comfort, accessibility and everyday use for all ages”.

Minister Cummins said: “The plaza has been at the heart of our city for 25 years and in a time where the areas along our Quays are experiencing real positive change – it is also an opportunity to bring a new lease of life to existing infrastructure.

“It has been clear for some time that this area, which is in a prime location, next to some of our most well-known tourism assets, has needed a facelift so when I was approached by CEO Sean McKeown about the possibility of funding the project, I was delighted to be in a position to do so.”

He went on to say that he is looking forward to seeing the project completed.

“The renewed plaza will support social interaction, rest, play and community life, creating a more vibrant civic destination.

“I look forward to working with the team at Waterford City and County Council to bring this project to fruition.

“I have no doubt that these refurbishment works will have an extremely positive impact for many years to come.”

The plaza, officially named the William Vincent Wallace Plaza, has been a prominent feature of the Quay for the past 25 years.

However, public representatives have raised concerns over its condition in recent years.
