The former Munster Express building on Merchant’s Quay in Waterford city is set to be redeveloped

Work is set to begin on the transformation of a historic building in Waterford city early next year.

The former Munster Express building on Merchant’s Quay is set to be redeveloped into a three-storey technological office, exhibition, and data hub.

The project will integrate the retained historic newspaper premises with new construction along Hanover Street and an entrance on O’Connell Street.

Waterford City and County Council has said that construction work on the project is set to commence early next year.

A council spokesperson said: “The main works tender has been approved for publication on eTenders and will be issued to shortlisted candidates in the coming week.

“Subject to Gateway 3 approval (pre-contract award) by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, it is anticipated that works will commence in Q1 2027.”

As part of the project, the existing historic frontage facing Merchant’s Quay will be preserved.

The adjacent structures along Hanover Street will be replaced with a modern three-storey addition.

The main entrance will be orientated towards O’Connell Street to maximize pedestrian and Cultural Quarter connectivity.
