There were major tailbacks in a number of areas of Waterford city on Wednesday

Traffic chaos was reported throughout Waterford city yesterday, with motorists left frustrated by major delays.

There were major tailbacks in a number of areas of the city, particularly on the Quay, the Mall and in Ferrybank.

Whilst two lanes of Rice Bridge were closed for a period to facilitate roadworks, these were completed by 2pm and there were traffic delays right through the afternoon and evening.

A number of motorists highlighted issues with the traffic lights on the city side of the bridge, which reportedly were only leaving a few cars through at a time.

One person commented: “Ridiculous delays to traffic today. Three or four cars only getting through from the Quay on to the bridge - way too much time being given to the pedestrian lights there also. Shockingly bad traffic management.”

Another motorist said: “It took me an hour and a half to get from the Dunmore Road to Ferrybank.

“It was the lights at the bridge and I reported it to the council. You see that’s what happens when you only have one bridge out of the city centre.

“The whole traffic light management in the city is so unprofessional. They haven’t a clue, it should be all joined up and synced, but it’s not.”

A number of other motorists also reported journey times of upwards of an hour just to get from one area of the city to another.

Major tailbacks were reported on the Dunmore Road, Cork Road and The Folly.

As well as that, there were huge delays on the N25 Waterford to Dungarvan road.

Roadworks are currently taking place on the road near Kilmeaden, with a stop-go system leading to huge tailbacks in the area.
