Independent councillor Joe Conway will now have to vacate his seat on Waterford City and Council
Independent Waterford Councillor Joe Conway has been elected to the Cultural and Educational Panel in Seanad Éireann following a recount.
Cllr Conway, who will now have to vacate his seat on Waterford City and Council, was elected on the 19th count after he surpassed outgoing Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee to take the seat.
The original result was affirmed following a recount which was requested by Ms Clifford-Lee. Cllr Conway continued to have the fifth-highest number of preferences after Clifford-Lee’s votes were distributed.
Speaking following his election, Cllr Conway said: “I want to thank everyone who supported me in my campaign. All my constituents, family and friends.”
Cllr Conway, who was elected to the Tramore & Waterford City West electoral district last June, previously served as the Mayor of Waterford City and County in 2023/2024.

A native of Ardagh, County Longford, he is a Gaeilgeoir and lifelong educator and former member of Údarás na Gaeltachta, who also nominated him to contest the election.
Before entering politics he was a school principal Killea BNS Dunmore East.
