An injured walker was rescued from the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford over the weekend.

The incident occurred near Coumshingaun Lough on Saturday evening.

South Eastern Mountain Rescue (SEMRA) detailed the rescue operation in a post on social media that night.

In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson for the group wrote: “SEMRA received a call from An Garda Síochána at 17:30 this evening to assist a fallen walker on the North Ridge above Coumshingaun Lough.

“The level of erosion on this track has made it very unstable underfoot, even in good hiking boots.

“Team members made their way to the mast at Kilclooney and began to head up to the walker’s location.”

They outlined the assistance that they provided to the injured walker upon reaching the scene.

“First team members reached the walker at 19:00 and proceeded to assess the injury and provide shelter and extra layers for the group as they were beginning to get very cold.

“Other team members followed on, carrying the stretcher and other essential kit for a stretcher carry out.

“The stretcher was set up and the team was preparing ropes when Rescue 117 arrived at the scene at 20:15. The winchman was lowered down to the casualty site.”

The spokesperson continued by highlighting how the rescue operation was concluded.

“Team members prepared the area and the other walkers and operated the hi-line while the casualty was winched into the heli.

“The remaining walkers were guided off the hill. Stand down issued at 22:39, everyone safely off the hill and heading for home.”
