Parking fines are initially €40 and increase to €60 after 28 days
Before trying to appeal a parking fine from Waterford City and County Council, there are a few important pieces of information that you should know.
Parking fines are generally €40 and increase to €60 after 28 days, but there are some exceptions.
A fine of €80 will be issued for parking on a footpath, grass margin, median strip, or cycling lane.
€150 will be charged to anyone who parks in a disable persons spot without displaying
If you decide to appeal a fine and 28 days pass before receiving a response from the local authority, you will still be responsible for paying the increased amount.
The 28 days also include bank holidays and weekends, and should not be mistaken for 28 working days.
After those 28 days, the fine will increase by 50%.
If it reaches 56 days since the fine was issued and no payment has been made, you will automatically be processed for court.
If, during the appeal process, the fine is paid, the appeal will be cancelled.
Waterford City and County Council employ Traffic Wardens to carry out parking enforcement and they wear body cameras as part of their uniform to reduce the risk of violence towards them.
In order to submit an appeal, you must attach any relevant documents that support the appeal.
This could include a photo of a broken ticket machine.
Appeals cannot be made for the following offences:
- Parking on a double yellow line
- Parking in a way that causes an obstruction such as on a footpath or corner
- Parking in a Disabled Bay without displaying a valid Disability Permit
- Parking in a prohibited location such as bus bay, taxi rank or residents' only area
- Parking in a Loading Bay without displaying a commercial tax disc, for longer than the time allowed
An appeal to Waterford City and County Council will not be accepted even if you did not have enough change for the ticket machine or could not locate a machine.
Your ticket not being visible in the windscreen, a delay in a meeting or doctor's appointment, and failure to read signs are also listed as unworthy excuses.
An appeal must be made within 21 days of receiving the fine or it will not be considered.
