First call out of 2024 as local RNLI aids four sailors in boat off Waterford coast

Helvick Head RNLI came to the aid of four sailors over the weekend after they got into difficulty and needed assistance two miles off Mine Head, south-west of Dungarvan. 

At the request of the Irish Coast Guard, the volunteer crew launched their inshore lifeboat into north-east Force 3-4 winds and calm waters. The lifeboat, helmed by Alan Kelly and with crew members Páidí Breathnach, Joe Foley and Rian Kelly onboard, made its way to the scene arriving at 2.40pm on Sunday afternoon, January 7.  

The crew assessed the situation and found all the casualties to be safe and well.  As the 5.5m rigid inflatable boat (RIB) had sustained engine failure, a decision was made to tow it back to Dungarvan harbour. A tow line was established, and the boats arrived safely back at 4.00pm.     

Speaking following the call out, Seán Walsh, Helvick Head RNLI Launching Authority said: "We would remind anyone planning a trip to sea to always go prepared. Wear a lifejacket and be sure to carry a means of communication. Should you get into trouble or see someone else in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard". 

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around Ireland and the UK. The RNLI operates 46 lifeboat stations in Ireland. The RNLI is independent of government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service.  

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, the charity has saved over 142,200 lives.
