Waterford set to celebrate St Patrick's Day with huge five day festival line-up revealed

Waterford is preparing for one of its biggest St Patrick’s celebrations in years after unveiling a packed five-day festival programme of free events across the city and county.

Ireland’s oldest city will host a wide-ranging schedule of music, history, street entertainment and family activities from Friday, March 13 through Tuesday, March 17, with organisers promising something for visitors and locals of all ages.

The expanded celebrations also highlight Waterford’s historic connection to the national holiday. Waterford-born Fr Luke Wadding is credited as the founder of St Patrick’s Day after adding the Feast of St Patrick to the official calendar of saints while working in Rome in the 1630s.

In celebration of that link, Visit Waterford says the city will come alive with a five-day festival extravaganza.

Festivities begin on Friday evening with the atmospheric Dark History Walking Tour, led by well-known local historian Jim Doherty. Departing from Reginald’s Tower at 7pm, the adults-only tour explores the darker side of Waterford’s past, including stories of plague, crime and mystery.

Music fans will also have plenty to choose from, with Irish country star Cliona Hagan performing at the Theatre Royal at 7.30pm, while the Applemarket and O’Connell Street Cultural Quarter will host a lively programme of live performances from groups including the Music Generation Trad Ensemble, Pat Cooney, Liam Merriman and Bill Stewart, and Kings of the Wild.

Electric Avenue will round out the night with Green Week performing the greatest hits of Green Day.

Across the weekend, visitors can take part in the Urban Greenway self-guided tour, which showcases Waterford as a “city of light” with historic monuments illuminated in green.

Meanwhile, Osprey Viking Cruises will offer special river history sailings highlighting Waterford’s links to St Patrick’s Day.

A city centre fairground will also operate throughout the festival in John Robert’s Square, featuring rides, amusements and local food stalls.

Saturday’s programme begins with a Spoken Word session at the Cultural Quarter, hosted by Waterford Writers, before visitors can step back in time at the Déise Medieval Viking reenactment at the Medieval Museum.

Families will also be able to enjoy Playful Streets activities and Celtic-inspired craft workshops from South East Craft Studios in John Robert’s Square.

Guided heritage tours such as Soldiers, Saints and Scholars, led by Johnny Codd, will offer another opportunity to explore Waterford’s rich past.

Music remains a major part of the weekend entertainment, with performances from the Waterford Centre of Music, Waterford Youth Bands, Music Generation and Divorce Party.

The Theatre Royal will also host Serena Terry Therapy, a comedy show from the popular Mammy Banter creator.

The Applemarket will then come alive with Blowtorch Boogie, a unique event combining traditional music with spectacular fire performances.

Sunday will feature a strong family programme including Little Irish Folklore Friends at The Book Centre, the ever-popular Wobbly Circus in John Robert’s Square, and a storytelling drama performance of The Legend of Queen Medb in the Medieval Museum Undercroft.

Live music will continue throughout the day with performances from Knockadollys, The Booley House, WAMA, Monticelli, Damn Dirty Apes and Spancill Jills.

On Monday, younger visitors can take part in Lucky Little Crafters at City Square Shopping Centre, while six hours of live music will take place in the O’Connell Street Cultural Quarter featuring Liam Frampton, Washed Out and Smurph.

Street entertainment will also feature the return of The Absurdist Pipe Band, before The Unusual Suspects bring the evening to a close with a high-energy party set.

The centrepiece of the celebrations will take place on St Patrick’s Day itself, when the Waterford City parade runs from 1pm to 3pm, beginning at Waterford Bus Station and travelling along the Quay to The Mall.

Spectators can expect a colourful showcase of community groups, Irish dancers, traditional music and festival favourites including The Absurdist Pipe Band and a special appearance by Thomas Francis Meagher.

Esteemed humanitarian and vascular surgeon Dr Morgan McMonagle has been announced as Grand Marshal for the 2026 parade. Originally from Cavan, Dr McMonagle works at University Hospital Waterford and has carried out humanitarian missions in conflict zones including Ukraine, Lebanon and Gaza through the David Nott Foundation.

Celebrations will also take place across the county, with St Patrick’s Day parades scheduled in Dungarvan, Cappoquin and Tramore.

Dungarvan will host its 47th parade from 2pm, Cappoquin’s 13th annual parade will begin at 11.30am, while Tramore’s parade will start at 1.30pm, travelling from Summerhill Junction to the former Railway Station building.
