There have been calls for urgent action amid an “alarming level of erosion” on a beach in County Waterford.

Sinn Féin councillor Kate O’Mahoney raised the issue of Cunnigar on her Facebook page recently.

Cunnigar is a coastal sand spit, which stretches out from the An Rinn peninsula into the middle of Dungarvan Bay.

Cllr O’Mahoney said: “When raising this to the council, I made it clear: we are truly blessed to have such incredible beaches on our doorstep.

“The Cunnigar is a place enjoyed by so many for walking, recreation, and its natural beauty - but with that privilege comes responsibility.

“Having visited the Cunnigar, I have seen firsthand the alarming level of erosion. The scale and pace of it demand immediate attention.

“We cannot afford to stand back and allow further damage to occur.”

She went on to outline the action she will take in order to ensure Cunnigar remains on the council’s agenda.

“I have requested a detailed assessment and am pushing for practical, nature-based solutions that will protect the Cunnigar, while preserving its unique character and biodiversity.

“Protecting the Cunnigar is about environmental stewardship, community well-being, and safeguarding our natural heritage for years to come.

“I will continue to press for urgent progress, because if we act now, we can protect the Cunnigar for future generations.”
