Motorists urged to avoid making any unnecessary journeys while the warnings are in place

A status orange thunderstorm warning has been issued for Waterford and four other counties in the South East as a slow-moving thunderstorm makes its way across the country.

Met Éireann upgraded an earlier status yellow weather warning just before 2pm this Tuesday. The Orange warning, now in effect for Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Tipperary, remains valid until 8pm.

Potential impacts include flash flooding, very difficult traveling conditions with poor visibility and potential damage to power lines.

Local authority crews and personnel from ESB Networks are on standby and will be deployed where necessary once it's safe to do so.

Motorists are being urged to avoid making any unnecessary journeys while the warnings are in place and to exercise extreme caution if driving during any heavy downpours.

Separately, a status yellow thunderstorm warning remains in effect until 10pm for every county across Ireland except Kerry.

According to Met Éireann, there will be frequent showers this Tuesday afternoon and evening while the best of any dry weather will be in the western fringes. It forecast temperatures of 15 to 19C in light winds.

Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue on Tuesday night but will become less frequent overnight and into Wednesday morning.
