One-way system to be rolled out for three-month trial on busy Waterford roads this month

Motorists in Waterford are being advised of a major upcoming traffic change, with a trial one-way system set to be introduced in the city on Passage Road and Wilkin Street.

Waterford City and County Council says the trial is being introduced from Monday, August 19, as part of the St John of God National School Active Travel Safe Routes to School Scheme and is designed to "help reduce traffic congestion in the area and improve safety for all road users, including school children, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists."

The new system will run for an initial three-month period, during which the Council will "evaluate the effectiveness of the one-way system as a traffic management solution and assess its potential for long-term improvements in the area."

It is hoped the move will not only improve safety for pupils and parents travelling to and from St John of God National School, but also ease traffic flow in one of the city's busiest areas during peak times.

A Council spokesperson added: "Your support is vital in helping us create safer and more sustainable spaces for all," thanking residents for their cooperation, "as we work to enhance the transport infrastructure in your area."

During the trial period, drivers are advised to familiarise themselves with the new layout in advance and allow extra travel time, particularly in the initial days as motorists adjust to the change.

The trial will continue until mid-November, after which the results will determine whether the one-way system becomes a permanent fixture.
