The children lost to the mother and baby homes were remembered at a vigil in Waterford on Sunday.

The vigil, which coincided with Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland, took place at the Good Shepherd Convent.

Events took place across the country over the weekend, remembering victims of clerical abuse. The Waterford vigil was organised by Leslie Hughes and Cathriona English, as part of the Baby Shoes Remember group. Black ribbons were tied to children's shoes and placed on the walls and pathway by the convent.

Some of those gathered shared examples of abuse and assaults that took place against people in the care of the Catholic Church. The gathering then walked slowly to musician Michelle Haberlin performing ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. The video of proceedings above, posted to Facebook by Aidan Dunne, has received over 184,000 views.

Leslie thanked everyone for attending the peaceful demonstration against the institution of the Catholic Church. “It was such a beautiful but emotional afternoon made even more poignant by the beautiful poems and haunting music,” she said.

“To those who shared experiences, a million thank you’s for speaking out - this is what we all need to do. To all those little souls, we will not let them forget you,” she added.
