An urgent call has been made to address a “very dangerous” roundabout in Waterford city.

Fine Gael councillor Jim Darcy spoke on the subject of the roundabout near Tesco Ardkeen at the May meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.

Cllr Darcy said: “Just a query about road markings in an area that I’m pretty sure has been mentioned a number of times.

“There seems to be very little road markings there, they’re basically just non-existent. In particular, the Tesco roundabout coming from Farronshoneen Roundabout.

“That’s an unusual roundabout in the sense that you have to stay right to go straight through that junction.”

He went on to outline why the lack of road markings presents an issue at that roundabout in particular.

“While I actually agree with that, I don’t understand it. In some ways that’s against the driving rules, that you stay in the right lane to go straight through the roundabout.

“The road markings are not there. For whatever reason the line markings are taking so long but that roundabout is actually very dangerous because it’s contrary to every other roundabout, probably in the country.

“So you really need road markings there as a matter of urgency.”

In response to Cllr Darcy, Paul Johnston, Senior Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that there is a sign in advance of the roundabout to warn motorists of the layout change.

Mr Johnston said: “Some of the roundabouts in the city, as you rightly pointed out, have been altered some time ago at this stage to increase the capacity of the roundabout.

“Strictly speaking, they are all signposted in advance of the roundabout.

“The executive will look to refresh any road markings that need to be looked at but it is signposted in each of those locations.”

He concluded by reassuring Cllr Darcy that council staff will refresh the markings at the Tesco roundabout in particular.
