A local Sinn Féin TD has joined calls for more trees to be planted in Waterford city.
Deputy Conor McGuinness took to social media following the publication of a recent article by Waterford Live.
The article detailed comments made by Sinn Féin councillor John Hearne at the June plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.
At the meeting, Cllr Hearne said there was an “awful lot of bare spots” in the city where trees could be planted.
Deputy McGuinness has since issued his support for those comments in a post on Facebook.
He stated: “In total agreement with Councillor John Hearne on this. More trees is always a great idea!
“Good for people, for a town centre, for nature, for air quality.
“The only thing to be careful of is ensuring that the correct species is planted in the appropriate place - you don’t want roots damaging footpaths, or trees dwarfing nearby buildings.”
“They’re way ahead of us in North America with a concept called urban forestry, cities aiming for 50% tree cover in the public realm with a whole load of benefits for residents, energy use, health and well being and wildlife.”
