Waterford Fine Gael TD John Cummins has congratulated Andy Burnham on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The Minister of State took to social media to recall meeting Mr Burnham during his St Patrick’s Day visit to Manchester.
In the post on Facebook, Minister Cummins said: “Congratulations to Andy Burnham on his appointment as Prime Minister today.
“I had the pleasure of meeting him earlier this year while in Manchester on an official visit as part of the St. Patrick’s Day programme.
“It was clear from our bilateral meeting that he has a deep desire to continue building strong relations between Ireland and Great Britain.
“I look forward to seeing that partnership continue to grow under his leadership.”
Mr Burnham was officially appointed Prime Minister of the UK on Monday, following his election as leader of the British Labour Party.
He becomes the fourth different Prime Minister that the UK has had in the past four years.
