Cllr Eamon Quinlan raised the issue at the July plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council

There has been no response from the First Minister of Northern Ireland to a motion passed by Waterford councillors on Irish unity, a council meeting has heard.

Fianna Fáil councillor Eamon Quinlan raised the issue at the July plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Quinlan said: “There was a load of chat during the week about Irish unity debates and it reminded me that this chamber unanimously passed a motion a few months ago about Irish unity.

“We sent a copy of it to An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD as well as to First Minister Michelle O’Neill.

“We did receive a response back from the Taoiseach in relation to our motion and he engaged on our points.”

He went on to say that the council has received no response from the First Minister of Northern Ireland.

“We are yet to receive a response from the First Minister Michelle O’Neill.

“Would it be possible for yourself or Corporate Services to write to the First Minister to ask her to please respond to our initial democratic motion?”

In response to Cllr Quinlan, Mayor Liam Brazil said that a letter would be issued on behalf of the council.
