A number of local councillors have expressed frustration over the lack of work taking place at two parks in County Waterford.

The issue was raised by Fine Gael councillor Damien Geoghegan at the June meeting of the Dungarvan-Lismore Metropolitan District.

Cllr Geoghegan said: “Last month I brought up the [Dungarvan] Linear Park and the Town Park and asked them to be brought up to the same standard as Walton Park.

“I got quite positive feedback from the public in relation to it because the reality is the public picks up on those type of things.

“It doesn’t take me to come in here for that to be noticed but nothing has happened in the past month, I have to say, in relation to either the Linear Park or the Town Park.

“There’s no point in going in there in October and doing work because it’s what we need for the summer and we need it to look really well for the summer as well.”

These points were echoed by Labour Party councillor Thomas Phelan, who expressed frustration over the response given by the council executive at the previous district meeting.

Cllr Phelan said: “Just following on from Cllr Geoghegan, I’d like to agree.

“We did get a bit of a response when the issue of the Linear Park [was raised] last month but I think we need a more structured plan, a written plan that could be circulated to councillors.

“That if asked, we can show it to people, a timing on it with milestones to be achieved because the answer we got last time was a little bit generic or vague to be honest with you.

“We just need a little bit more detail and a timeline on it as to what’s to be done and when it’s likely to be done.”

In response to the two councillors, Maria Goff, Senior Executive Engineer at Waterford City and Council, focused on the fountain at Dungarvan Linear Park in particular.

“I think the timelines that people are referring to are for the fountain and the hedge there.

“I suppose there’s a bit of work involved in bringing back the fountain, to restore it to its original state. It will take a number of months for us to carry out works there.”

She concluded by saying that the council “only has limited resources” and that its priority is the upgrade of the playgrounds in the Linear Park and Walton Park.
