Eight gardai to be honoured for their bravery in the line of duty

Scott Medals are the highest honour that can be bestowed by the Garda Commissioner to members of the force and they are awarded for exceptional heroism involving risk to life

The Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will honour eight gardai later this Monday for their bravery in the line of duty.

Eight Scott medals are to be awarded at a ceremony in Dublin, three of them posthumously. A number of those being honoured are still working for An Garda Siochana while others are retired.

Scott Medals are the highest honour that can be bestowed by the Garda Commissioner to members of the force and they are awarded for exceptional heroism involving risk to life.

Of the medals being presented this Monday, two are gold, one is silver and five are bronze. The medals are being presented for the actions of the garda members during a number of incidents which happened at locations across the country between March 1931 and March 2022.

The Scott Medal recipients are

Superintendent John Curtin, gold medal (posthumously); Detective Sergeant Denis O’Brien, gold medal (posthumously); Garda Timothy Sweeney, silver medal; Garda Morgan Lahiffe, silver medal (posthumously); Sergeant Niamh Connaughton, bronze medal; Detective Garda Warren Farrell, bronze medal; Inspector Joseph Finnegan, bronze medal and Sergeant Kieran Flynn, bronze medal.

The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee will attend this Monday's ceremony which will be live-streamed on the Garda Facebook page.
