A fundraiser to help pay the medical bills of an Irish student hospitalised with serious injuries after a taxi crash in the US is almost at its goal.
Twenty two year old Shane Campbell from Kells, Co Meath went to Chicago for the summer with his twin brother, Niall, but his American dream soon became a nightmare as the taxi he was a passenger in was involved in a horrific collision.
Shane has since been a patient in John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County for the past four weeks (since June 5).
According to a Go Fund Me campaign set up to raise funds for his medical bills, Shane was initially maintained in an induced coma and intubated.
As well as several broken bones, Shane suffered significant abdominal trauma which has required ten surgical procedures to date and may require more in the future.
He has thankfully improved, is awake and cognitive, but faces a long road to recovery. He needs several more weeks of medical care in John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County followed by months of rehab.
