Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a man was critically injured during a violent incident in County Waterford.

Gardaí in Dungarvan say the "serious assault" happened at the junction of Cook Street and Mill Street in Cappoquin at around 11.50pm on Friday.

"A male, aged in his 40s, was conveyed to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of serious injuries, where he remains in critical condition," said a garda spokesperson.

No further information has been disclosed publicly regarding the specific details of the incident and it's understood gardai are seeking to establish exactly what happened.

A significant garda investigation has been launched and they are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to the incident or who may have video footage to contact them.
