An appeal has been lodged against the decision to refuse permission for the construction of a 21-metre telecommunications mast close to the seaside town of Tramore.

Waterford City and County Council rejected the proposed development which has been earmarked for a site at Newtown Stables, Fenor Road, Newtown - approximately 2km from the the town centre.

Vodafone has expressed its support for the development saying the erection of the mast will improve service as well as for ongoing operations and maintenance benefits.

"This installation will significantly improve coverage and enhance the provision of the new 4G and 5G services to the local area," stated the company.

In a report, prepared by the local authority, planners noted that a number of submissions were received from local residents and that a number of concerns were raised about the proposed development.

These include the visual impact on the surrounding area, the proximity to residential development, the potential impact on property values and Environmental/health concerns.

Recommending that permission be refused, planners stated the proposed development would be contrary to a policy objective included in the Waterford City and County Development Plan 2022-2028 which states that scenic routes and views will be protected.

The report also states that planners do not consider the site to be appropriate for the proposed development "based on its location in the immediate surrounds of Tramore, its proximity to neighbouring residential development and residential zoned land together with the height, scale and design of the structure."

According to planning files, permission was formally refused on April 29.

The applicant - Vantage Towers Limited - has now appealed the local authority's decision to An Bord Pleanála which has indicated the case is due to be decided by September 16, next.
