HSE figures have revealed that 36,237 people are waiting for outpatient procedures at University Hospital Waterford, making it the largest waiting list of any individual hospital in the country.

The HSE's Performance Assurance Report (PAR) provides an overall analysis of key performance data from Divisions within the HSE, such as Acute, Mental Health, Social Care, Primary Care, Health and Wellbeing as well as Finance and HR.

Part of that report analysed the waiting lists for outpatient and inpatient procedures and appointments across the country's hospital network.

36,237 of those were awaiting procedures at University Hospital Waterford, well above the 23,477 at Cork University Hospital or any of the top Dublin hospitals. Just over 21.5% (7,875) of those on the list in Waterford had been waiting less than three months, while just over 41.5% (14,917) were waiting for more than a year on the list.

University Hospital Waterford falls under the South/South West Hospital Group along with Bantry General, Cork University Hospital, Cork University Maternity Hospital, Mallow General, Mercy University Hospital Cork, South Infirmary/Victoria University Hospital Cork, South Tipperary General Hospital and University Hospital Kerry. Across all of those hospitals, 107,664 people were waiting for outpatient services at the end of 2017.

Waterford has the highest numbers waiting with 36,237, while University Hospital Cork has the second largest waiting list with 23,477. A third (33.6%) of all patients awaiting outpatient procedures across the South/South West Hospital Group are waiting for appointments at University Hospital Waterford.

The figures reveal that 3,283 have been waiting between 12-15 months for procedures at Waterford, with a further 2,792 waiting between 15-18 months and a staggering 8,842 waiting more than 18 months.

There is a similar situation for inpatient services at University Hospital Waterford where once again the South East facility has the largest waiting list in the South/South West Hospital Group.

485 people are awaiting inpatient services in Waterford with 10% of those (48) waiting more than 18 months. A further 77 patients had been waiting between 12-18 months at the end of 2017 in the Waterford city hospital.

Waterford's figures are the highest in the South/South West Hospital Group. South Infirmary/Victoria University Hospital Cork had the second largest with 456, while a further 325 were waiting at Cork University Hospital at the end of last year.
