Bogus traders in Waterford 'may use intimidation' to scam residents, gardai warn
Gardai in Waterford have issued a warning to local residents to watch out for bogus traders in the area, especially around bad weather.
Gardai said that there was rise in bogus traders in 2025, often targeting vulnerable residents for cash for unnecessary or poor-quality repairs.
Common scams include fake roofers, tree cutters, and paving, sometimes using intimidation.
Gardai advise people in Waterford to never engage with or pay cash to cold-callers offering services.
Verify Credentials: Ask for ID, a brochure, and a V.A.T. number.
Genuine traders won't be offended, gardai say and they advise to "get written quotes, always seek itemised, written quotations from multiple, reputable local sources".
Gardai also warn people to use the chain on their door when answering a caller to be cautious.
You should report suspicious activity and note descriptions of people, clothing, and vehicle registration numbers, and report immediately to your local Garda station or 999/112.
