The Dunmore East RNLI Open Water Swim Charity Event is back for 2024 taking place over the bank holiday weekend on Sunday June 2nd.

Kicking off at 1.40pm at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club in Dunmore East, over 350 swimmers will take part across three swims of varying length - 1,600m, 800m, and 500m – to provide opportunities for individuals of all levels to brave the open water.

Sponsored by EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, this event is a key annual fixture in supporting the invaluable work of Dunmore East RNLI.

Now celebrating 200 years of service, the RNLI’s 9000+ volunteers provide an on-call 24-hour search and rescue services across Ireland and the UK. In 2023 alone, there were 963 lifeboat launches and 34 lives saved in Ireland.

Welcoming the 2024 event, Margaret Barry, Chairperson of Dunmore East RNLI fundraising branch said: "Building upon the momentum of the previous year, the 2024 Dunmore East RNLI Open Water Swim promises to be an unforgettable experience, uniting swimmers of all levels in support of the important work carried out by the Dunmore East RNLI.

"We are also delighted to announce EirGrid as our new event sponsor. Their commitment to a three-year sponsorship undoubtedly enhances the significance of this year's event, ensuring its continued impact and success".

Safety is the utmost priority, with a dedicated team of expert kayakers and safety boats on side to escort the swimmers throughout the event.

Speaking ahead of the event Sinead Dooley, Head of Public Engagement at EirGrid said: “As we work towards creating a more sustainable future for the next generation, powered by clean, renewable energy, it is important to recognise the remarkable level of time, energy, and commitment given by people in communities across Ireland. EirGrid is proud to be sponsoring the Dunmore East RNLI Open Water Swim, in support of the critical work of the RNLI and their many volunteers.

"I would like to wish all the participants the best of luck and hope they enjoy what I'm sure will be a great day for all involved”.
