Alert: Flooding risk as people in Waterford urged to avoid coastal areas during Storm Babet

The public in Waterford has been advised to exercise caution due to heavy rain and blustery conditions in the county which will make conditions hazardous around the coast as Storm Babet hits the county.

Storm Babet will bring spells of heavy rain and blustery east to southeast winds at times. The Met Éireann warning is valid until 1pm tomorrow, Wednesday, October 18th.

Fergus Galvin, Director of Services with Waterford City and County Council has urged the public to exercise caution. 

“With the possibility of blustery winds and heavy rainfall, driving conditions will be difficult, as there is the risk of localised flooding, fallen branches and poor visibility, all which will make journeys hazardous.

“Waterford City and County Council’s severe weather management team has met this morning and is continually monitoring the situation. Ground crews are on stand-by to deal with any issues that may arise, such as localised flooding, blocked drains, gulley overflows, etc. We would urge the public to heed all public safety advice and avoid unnecessary journeys until Storm Babet has receded”.

The Prom in Tramore will be closed from 4pm this afternoon, coinciding with high tide and the risk of wave overtopping.

In addition, as a precautionary measure Davitt’s Quay Carpark, The Look Out, Castle Street Carpark and The Pond in Dungarvan will also be closed from 4pm today until tomorrow morning, October 18th.

Waterford City and County Council is advising the public to ensure no cars are left in these car parks overnight as they are at risk of coastal flooding.

* Stay away from all coastal areas for the duration of the Met Éireann warnings

* All road users should be aware of the hazardous travelling conditions, and only necessary journeys should be undertaken.
