Calls for permanent rainbow crossing in Waterford

A rainbow crossing should become a permanent feature in Waterford to represent inclusion and Gay Pride, according to the local People Before Profit (PBP) party.

“Since People Before Profit first called for a Rainbow Crossing in Waterford, some years back”, says Úna Dunphy of PBP, “numerous towns and cities across the country have surpassed us in getting on with painting these into their urban landscapes, as symbols of solidarity and inclusion”.

"Each time a hateful message appears, fear is instilled in children about coming out.  This can only be extinguished by our leaders emphatically denouncing such attacks in words and actions. A Pride Crossing across one of the city’s main thoroughfares would address this adequately," Ms Dunphy said.

"We must not get complacent about the central message of Pride, that of the social and political battle for rights, many won following decades of protest, by people who took to the streets to gain them. However, as long as haters keep attacking these rights, the campaign continues.

"The level of support and enthusiasm for flying the rainbow flag shows the real pride that people in Waterford have in our community, and the desire to reject the bigots.  We encourage everyone to answer the homophobic hate with defiance and solidarity," Ms Dunphy added.

"People Before Profit Waterford yet again calls on Waterford Council to get on with a local Rainbow crossing. They have already agreed to this and are once again returning to ludicrous arguments to stymie progress.," she added.
