No dates are available for an NCT test in Waterford for almost six months, it has emerged.

Dates in June 2023 are the first available appointments at the test centre in Waterford.

There is also a similar wait in nearby Kilkenny.

Other centres in Carlow and Portlaoise have availability in July.

However, counties Cavan, Louth, Kildare and Dublin fare even worse and have no availability until August.

While no tests are currently available on line at the moment, it can pay to keep checking online as some earlier appointments do seem to come up sporadically.

NCT advises if you are unable to obtain an appointment at your chosen Test Centre you may add your vehicle to a priority list via its web booking facility or call centre. NCTS say they will do their best to accommodate you with a time and date that is convenient for you.

Junior Transport Minister, Jack Chambers, acknowledged the impact that long waiting times are having on some drivers and said improvement is badly needed.

"The current waiting list times are totally unacceptable. I know it's very disappointing for many people and is causing anxiety and worry for people who are waiting for a test".

"People expect a proper standard of service. It's meant to be a 12-day average wait time from Applus+ which provides the service on behalf of the Road Safety Authority".

Minister Chambers says extra capacity should see more NCTs completed in the coming months.
