There have been calls for more signs to be erected in Waterford city in recognition of its twinning with the Palestinian city of Ramallah.

The Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Seamus Ryan, spoke on the subject at the March meeting of the Metropolitan District.

Mayor Ryan said: “The last item is the town twinning signs on the approach roads to the city.

“We now have two I believe gone up. I know I saw one in Sally Park and I believe there’s one out on the Cork Road. Can I ask where the other two are going to go?”

In response, Senior Engineer Paul Johnston said there were no plans for an additional two signs.

Mr Johnston said: “I suppose there are two up on the Sally Park approach and the Cumann na mBan Ring Road.

“We had intended to leave it at that councillor. If you think four are required then we can certainly look at it.”

He continued by noting that there are “quite a lot” of such signs around because Waterford has twinned with so many places.

He also highlighted that there are similar signs in the towns of Tramore and Dungarvan.

Later in the meeting, independent councillor Joe Kelly also called for the introduction of additional signs.

Cllr Kelly said: “Finally, just to support Cllr Seamus Ryan. It’s nice to see the new twinning signs, they’re very good signs but if we could have one or two more.

“I know Paul [Johnston] said it to me offline that if the council does it, [it needs to] put them in a safe space.

“But we could find safe spaces, Paul. I think it mightn’t be a bad idea and wouldn’t do us any harm at all.”

In response, Mr Johnston said that if there are locations available, the council can look at providing additional signage.
