From gothic theatre to live music and sensory-friendly nights, Waterford's pilot scheme brings fresh colour after dark

City nights to sparkle as Waterford rolls out new after-dark events this autumn

Waterford's nightlife is set for a major boost this autumn, with a new programme of events aimed at bringing more life to the city after dark on quieter midweek evenings.

It comes after Waterford City and County Council approved a raft of projects under its Night-Time Economy (NTE) Pilot Grant Scheme, designed to spread cultural activity beyond weekends and extend the buzz of the Purple Flag Zone well into the off-season.

Some of the events planned to light up Waterford city by night include immersive guided tours exploring Waterford's history in fresh and imaginative ways; cultural and theatrical experiences, including some gothic-inspired performances in atmospheric venues; live music events from youth showcases to innovative concert formats.

There will also be inclusive events tailored for people with sensory needs, and even a wrestling show with a distinctly Irish storytelling twist.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Séamus Ryan, said the creativity of the applications showed "imaginative, immersive and ambitious" ideas from Waterford's cultural community. "The events that received funding will greatly enhance the city's nighttime atmosphere and light up the city this autumn," he added.

Michael Quinn, Director of Services with Waterford City and County Council, said the pilot scheme reflects the potential to grow a nightlife that is "inclusive, exciting, and sustainable" while supporting local businesses year-round.

The approved events will run across September, October and November, promising to make Waterford a go-to destination for vibrant and safe nighttime experiences this autumn.
