The issue was raised by Cllr Declan Barry at the May meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.

An “army tank” wouldn’t get through an “absolutely horrendous” road in County Waterford, a council meeting has heard.

The issue was raised by independent councillor Declan Barry at the May meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.

Cllr Barry said: “I have been dealing with [Director of Services] Seamus De Faoite on this. It’s regarding the road down at the apartments that are council-run inside in Cheekpoint.

“You wouldn’t get through it now with a Land Rover or an army tank to be quite honest. It’s absolutely horrendous.

“We’re taking money from these council tenants and the landowner is getting a big wallow of money every month and he won’t take any action. It’s up to them as far as I can see.”

He went on to call on the council executive to take action to force the landowner to address the issue.

“So I would suggest that maybe if we turned off the cheque for a month or two, maybe he would take action then.

“There’s children with special needs, there’s elderly people and that and it is not fit for purpose. This has been going on too long now.”

In response to Cllr Barry, Paul Johnston, Senior Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that the council has not taken the road in charge.

“It’s not a public road is the answer to your question,” he added.
