Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 80s was killed in a late-night crash in County Galway.

Emergency services raced to the scene at Peake, Loughgeorge, shortly after 11.30pm on Friday when a car struck a pedestrian on the N83.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been taken to University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The Coroner has been notified.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for assessment, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The stretch of road remains closed this morning for a full technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí," a spokesperson said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
