The drugs seized, weighing roughly the same as a grand piano, were found in a search by Gardaí in the Ballymount area of Tallaght.

Gardaí in south Dublin made four arrests yesterday in connection with the discovery of a sizeable stash of cannabis.

In a joint operation conducted by the National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, as well as the Tallaght Drug Unit supported by the Revenue Customs Service, two vehicles were intercepted and a planned search of a business premises in Ballymount was conducted.

In the course of the searches, 429 kilos of cannabis with a street value of €8.5 million was seized.

Four men, aged 31, 45, 52 and 58, were arrested for "offences of facilitating and enhancing a criminal organisation to commit drug trafficking offences" according to Gardaí.

All four are currently detained at Garda stations in the Dublin Region.

Gardaí confirmed in a statement that investigations are ongoing.

Following the operation, the head of Organised and Serious Crime, Assistant Commissioner Justin Kelly said: "This operation is another example of our commitment to target the enablers and facilitators of global drug trafficking networks and our ongoing efforts to make Ireland a difficult environment for them to operate in.”
