Hundreds of motorists have been caught speeding across the country so far this bank-holiday weekend, gardai have revealed.

It's one of the busiest weekends of the year on the roads which means there are more people out and about including cyclists, runners and pedestrians.

Gardai are mounting a special roads policing operation across the weekend in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority.

"So far, we have detected over 600 speeding drivers as part of our roads policing operation being conducted with our Road Safety Authority Ireland colleagues," said a garda spokesperson.

In a post on social media, gardai have highlighted a number of notable detections from around the country.

These include a vehicle caught travelling at 109km/h in a 60km/h zone in Dublin 24; a vehicle travelling at 120km/h in an 80km/h zone in Donegal and a vehicle travelling at 145km/h in a 100km/h zone in Roscommon.

"This long weekend, there are more road users out on the roads than usual whether out walking, cycling or driving to go see loved ones. We urge you to please slow down, do not drive while under the influence and please keep your focus on the road," said a garda spokesperson.
