It is important for school leavers and their families to focus on the positives following the receipt of Leaving Cert results, says Dr Derek O’Byrne, Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT).
“I would like to congratulate people receiving their Leaving Cert results today - however you have done, it is a huge achievement and the start of a new exciting phase in your life,” Dr Byrne says.
“There’s a great emphasis put on Leaving Cert results each year and it is important for people to understand that there are multiple pathways to many careers. Life after Leaving Cert offers a myriad of opportunities and it’s important that people take the time to choose what’s right for them”.
He adds that for many school leavers the careers on offer will vary and evolve over the coming decades. “The chances are the role you go on to work in 10 years down the line does not yet exist, so it’s important to stay positive about the opportunities ahead.”
It’s also worth remembering that there are still options open to people for college entry in 2018, including the CAO vacant places list and many direct entry programmes.
WIT helps students make the right decisions and gives support to parents in a number of ways. From Monday 20th August, the college will run Ask WIT events which consist of live online Q and As, a drop-in centre and phone/text support.
To help people make the right choice, WIT will host a week of CAO offers, with live web chats starting at 6am on Monday 20th August and running 9am-5pm all week.
Parents and students with questions relating to a CAO offer can phone a dedicated support team on 051 834176 / 834177 from 7am on Monday 20 August and 9am-5pm all week.
Prospective students and their parents can also text any questions or queries they have to WIT's WhatsApp on 087-3771770.
A CAO offers drop-in centre will run between 10am and 3pm from Monday 20th to Wednesday 22nd August on WIT’s Cork Road Campus.
