Waterford is home to a host of Ireland's finest hotels. From romantic getaways to family breaks and golf trips, Waterford Live has listed TripAdvisor's Top 5 hotels in the county, all within minutes of Waterford city centre.

1. Waterford Castle Hotel and Golf Resort

Located on an enchanted 310-acre private island, Waterford Castle Hotel and Golf Resort is accessible via a short car ferry crossing over King’s Channel.

The resort offers the very best of Irish hospitality on the most beautiful surroundings imaginable, combining gracious living of an elegant past with every modern comfort and conveyance.

“I recently stayed here on a hen and I must say it was a lovely experience  .. [The lodges] are not what I would normally think of when a lodge is mentioned - they are actually fabulous, modern three bed houses. Such a nice surprise. As part of our weekend we had dinner in the clubhouse on the island. It was lovely to have a room to ourselves and the food and staff were excellent. I would definitely recommend the resort,” a reviewer from Galway commented.

An American reviewer also praised the lodges. “We were a family a five and we enjoyed three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The fireplace was charming. There are deer everywhere and although we were there when there was snow, it was very cozy”.

A reviewer from Texas echoed similar sentiments. "[Waterford Castle] is straight out of a fairytale .. Our stay at Waterford Castle was one of our top three experiences of our Ireland trip .. We altered our plans to linger in the castle a few extra hours because we enjoyed our stay so much”.

2. Granville Hotel

Waterford city’s Granville Hotel is the birthplace of Thomas Francis Meagher, the man responsible for the Irish National Flag. The hotel building dates back to the 1700s and has played a predominant role in Waterford's rich history. The family run hotel provides comfort, service and hospitality.

“Wonderful staff - they could not have been more helpful. I lost my voltage charger and they loaned me one. When I could not find one in the area to purchase they let me keep the one they loaned me for a small service charge. Location is perfect, within walking distance of all. Great breakfast and lovely room. Parking directly across the street,” a reviewer from New York said.

A reviewer from Chicago, who travelled with his two daughters, said the Granville is the best hotel in Waterford. “Wonderfully majestic hotel with comfy beds, fluffy pillows, great bar and fantastic restaurant. Centrally located along the waterfront. Do not miss the outstanding breakfast where the kindest server, Mary, will happily ladle the best porridge on the planet - Flahavans - into your waiting bowl. Then you may choose to add a bit of Bailey’s Irish Cream (fabulous) or Irish Whiskey. Then try Irish Blaa rolls with some of Granville’s homemade raspberry jam. Delicious! Heavenly way to start the day”.

3. Waterford Marina Hotel

Waterford Marina Hotel sits on the banks of the River Suir near the city centre. It has a riverside restaurant, rooms with free WiFi and free on-site parking. Nearby attractions include Waterford Crystal, the Viking Triangle, Bishops Palace, Reginald’s Tower and Christ Church Cathedral.

“We are regular visitors to this excellent hotel and were pleasantly surprised on our recent visit to find improvements taking place, from refurbished rooms of the highest quality, a contemporary breakfast setting and the addition of mouth-watering pizzas to the bar menu. The staff were as welcoming as ever and a special shout out to the hardworking room service who keep cleanliness at the top of the agenda. Well done to all, especially Jo-Anne and Michael who do everything to make your stay top class. We will be back,” a reviewer from Cork said.

4. Dooley's Hotel

Waterford city’s Dooley’s Hotel is a third generation family run hotel which started its life with eight bedrooms, a range that burnt turf and eight cups with no handles. Dooley’s has transformed itself into a 112 bedroom hotel with a large conference and banqueting suite.

“Very enjoyable stay at this hotel with good food and lovely staff .. The large rooms have been upgraded and have a king and a single bed in most rooms. We were there for four nights and had music in the bar on two nights. The hotel is located opposite the bus terminus and is in walking distance to the railway station. It doesn't have a leisure centre, but Thai massage is available in the hotel,” a reviewer, who travelled with a retirement group, said.

Located on the fringe of Waterford city and surrounded by natural beauty, a stay at Athenaeum House Hotel is a truly unforgettable experience.

"Always stay at this hotel when we are in the area and I’ve never had a problem with it. Friendly staff with lovely food and excellent breakfast. Lovely area and very quiet. Hotel cat is friendly and just wants to sit on your knee permanently. Will be going back in the summer," a reviewer from England said.
