A call has been made for a park to be built in a growing part of Waterford city.

Sinn Féin councillor Joeanne Bailey spoke on the subject at the July plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

She was speaking amid the announcement of the council’s Capital Programme for the next four years.

Cllr Bailey said: “I’d like to welcome the €900,000 for parks and what I’m calling then for is to look at an area and using some of this funding of €900,000 for a new park in the Sacred Heart / St John’s Park area in the city.

“It is one of the most built up areas in the city at the moment and we don’t have a park for all ages, we don’t have a basketball court, we don’t have a football pitch that they can kick around.

“We have a small park in the Butler Centre that’s for small children and that is out of action at the moment.

“I’d like to put on record that I’m calling yet again for money to be spent in the area to bring the small park up to standard first and then to go out and identify land and see what funding can be sought to put a new park into the area.”

The Capital Programme provides for a total projected investment of €679.2 million across housing, economic development, transport, community facilities, climate and infrastructure projects to the end of 2028.

The rolling Capital Programme sets out a structured pipeline of projects at various stages of development.

The council’s total estimated match funding requirement is €109.1 million, which will be supported by a combination of Government grants, development contributions, asset sales, reserves and loan financing.
