Ireland's first ever Autism Friendly Run will soon take place in Waterford.

The charity event is happening on June 23 in Waterford city, starting at Grattan Quay. Note that this event is seperate from Waterford Viking Marathon and will have different start and finish points.

Participants of the Autism Friendly Run will cross the Edmund Rice Bridge, head for the Waterford City Bypass where they will pass through a toll bridge, and finish once again at Grattan Quay - covering a distance of just over 8km.

The 12th Waterford Viking Marathon teamed up with charity AsIAm and the initiative Autism Friendly Waterford to raise money and awareness for the cause.

Alongside the main event of full, half and quarter marathons, an Autism Friendly Run was also created.

A number of measures have been put in place to give adults with varied levels of autism an opportunity to take part in the outdoor event.

"This is the very first event of its kind," a spokesperson said. "We would love to spread the word of it to the Autism community, and inspire other event organisers to create similar events."
