Waterford FC caught what was described as an "opposition analyst" from a League of Ireland rival hiding and filming their recent training session, a statement from the club said.

The person was removed from the training ground and the club says it will be reporting the incident to the FAI.

"We are disappointed to have discovered the “Opposition Analyst” of a certain club hiding filming our training session today as we prepare for tomorrow night’s game," the social media post said on Friday.

"Needless to say he was removed and the incident will be reported to the FAI," the club statement added.

Waterford FC host Galway Utd at 7.45pm on Saturday.

The incident evokes memories of the 'spygate' saga involving Leeds and their manager at the time, Marcelo Bielsa.

In January 2019 Leeds United were caught up on controversy after being caught "spying" on opponents Derby County in the build up to their Championship clash.

One of the Argentina manager's staff members was caught outside of the Derby County training ground on a public footpath observing their manager Frank Lampard's preparations for the fixture.

Bielsa then gave a lengthy press conference, including a Powerpoint demonstration,  in which he outlined details of the preparation he went to before matches.
