A talented young Waterford athlete has been awarded a coveted sports scholarship at Dublin City University (DCU) this week.

Callum Hurley of Ferrybank AC was among 185 students recognised at DCU’s recent Sport Scholarships ceremony, where athletes from across the country were honoured for their performances and potential.

Callum is currently studying for a BEng in Mechanical & Sustainability Engineering at DCU, combining elite-level athletics with third-level education as part of the university’s athlete-led Sport Scholarship programme.

The DCU scheme offers tailored supports to student athletes depending on their level, potential and individual needs, with the aim of making it easier to balance high-level sport with academic life.

The programme first launched in 1996 with GAA scholarships and has since expanded to include sports such as athletics, rugby, soccer and hockey.

James Galvin, Director of Sport at DCU, said: “Physical activity is a cornerstone of the student journey at DCU, and we are delighted to reward student athletic performance through our scholarships.

“DCU Sport champions a whole-person approach for dual-career athletes, reinforcing our dedication to empowering students to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their careers.

“Our scholarships programme has gone from strength to strength in the past 30 years, and we are excited about its future. I hope the scholarship and the supports of the programme will give you the opportunity to give your all in pursuing your dreams in sport and education.”

DCU’s Sport Scholarship programme is fully accredited by Sport Ireland Institute, recognising best practice in supporting athletes who are combining elite sport with third-level education.

Applications for DCU Sport Scholarships for entry in 2026 are now open, with DCU encouraging talented athletes across the country to apply.
